HOMOLOGATION: SOUTH AFRICA

OVERVIEW OF REQUIREMENTS

South Africa requires that all ICT equipment must be homologated and/or certified and/or type approved before it can be imported and sold in the local South African market.

Within South Africa there are two government departments responsible for this activity within the ICT sector.

ICASA:  Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) requires that all telecommunications terminal equipment and all radio equipment must be registered for type approval.

NRCS:  The National Regulatory Compulsory Specifications (NCRS) is responsible for issuing Letters of Authority (LOA).  The LOA is required by all local manufacturers or importers of product before the product may be sold to consumers.  The LOA will only be issued by the NRCS after the successful evaluation of the application submitted.
